August 2, 2012. In her preview of the performances for Stage Presence, Shannon Jackson poses questions about the spatial and temporal conditions, viewing relations, and institutional parameters an audience might encounter in a live performance series at a museum and the relevance of reflecting on such a series in a review format. These questions prompted us in turn to consider how a review constructs and restricts the conditions for viewing. The art critc Michael Newman asserts that our “inventive task” is to convert the experience of a work of art “into one with value for those with other perspectives, in the present.” And so this issue, while overtly emphasizing two institutions and three exhibitions, is a case study in creating that value through recurring encounters with portraiture, representation, theatricality, performance, staging, politics, activism, and history. By limiting the subjects under consideration in the reviews and shotguns, we're inviting you not only to absorb multiple perspectives but join us in an expanded sense of viewing. Enjoy - PM
